Why High Altitude Surgeries Could Pose a Risk to Your Patients' Health

Why High Altitude Surgeries Could Pose a Risk to Your Patients' Health

Understanding the Risks of Surgery at High Altitude

For medical concierge practice owners aiming to offer unparalleled patient care, understanding every potential risk factor is crucial. New research suggests that surgeries performed at high altitudes present unique challenges, particularly concerning the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), a condition that includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

Key Findings from Recent Studies

A retrospective review conducted by Kevin D. Plancher, MD, MPH, and his team at Plancher Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine revealed illuminating insights into this phenomenon. Analyzing data from over 306,281 patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), they found significant differences in vascular complication risks based on elevation.

The study compared outcomes of 57,135 surgeries performed at elevations of 4,000 feet or higher with 171,322 surgeries at 100 feet or lower. Results indicated that patients operated on at higher altitudes faced substantially increased risks for VTE and DVT within 30 and 90 days post-operation. However, no significant differences were noted in the occurrence of PE at either timeframe.

Implications for Medical Concierge Practices

For those in concierge medicine striving for a deep connection with patients through comprehensive care, these findings offer critical insights. High-altitude surgery could inadvertently introduce additional risks, altering the landscape of patient safety and care.

It's essential for practices situated in elevated regions to weigh these factors when performing surgeries and consider additional precautions to mitigate these risks. Discussing potential VTE risks with patients before surgery could further enhance care and patient trust.

Looking Ahead: Preparing for Possible Challenges

The healthcare industry continues to evolve, and staying informed of studies like this equips practices to anticipate and mitigate potential hurdles. With comprehensive patient engagement and a proactive approach, medical concierge practices can continue to grow while ensuring top-tier care.
